Cleanroom Gateway
Overview:
The Cleanroom Gateway is a hands-on training program developed by the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) with support from the DOW Microelectronics Commons. It introduces participants to the environment, tools, and practices of semiconductor microfabrication, preparing them for further training or employment in the field.
Participants earn stackable IEEE micro-credentials that can be added to their resume or LinkedIn profile. The Gateway model can also be adopted by other cleanroom facilities to train learners with no prior experience in semiconductors or microfabrication.
Explore Semiconductor Training at USC:
At USC, the Cleanroom Gateway is offered as part of the CHIPS Technician Fellows Program, a paid training experience introducing participants interested in upskilling or reskilling to semiconductor manufacturing and cleanroom operations. Fellows gain hands-on experience with tools and processes used across the industry while developing foundational technical skills.
Participants receive a $1,600 stipend while training in the state-of-the-art John O’Brien Nanofabrication Laboratory. No prior experience or technical background is required.

Adopt the Cleanroom Gateway Program:
The Cleanroom Gateway framework can be implemented by universities, community colleges, and cleanroom facilities. The Handbook offers guidance for institutions interested in adopting or adapting the model. You can access the handbook on our Resources page.
